Miami, b**ch

We left Phoenix a bit late but avoided rush hour traffic.  We took the Superstition freeway and the drive got interesting only after the road turned into a two-way highway many many miles outside of Phoenix.

The desert was absolutely beautiful.

Fortunately we headed to the mountains so today was much cooler.  We could talk while driving even. No freeway noise and we could keep the windows rolled up.  And our gas mileage was much improved today.  We probably averaged 18 mpg, which is good for Vanna.  She is a big drinker, but I'm not one to cast stones.

We drove through the historic towns of Superior, Miami, and Globe.  Globe was particularly beautiful.   John enjoyed being able to say he was in Miami, even if they didn't have a beach.

We drove through miles of cotton farms near Pima.  There was so much cotton that had blown by the side of the road that in places it looked like it had snowed.

We had lunch in Safford, and the restaurant's advertisement was totally accurate.  The food was probably the best Mexican food I've had.  That's Vanna's butt in the pic, too.

Our destination for the day was Silver City, New Mexico.  The NY Times had done a travel article on Silver City this year and had named it one of the top 100 artists communities in the U.S.  It is charming but small.  We arrived too late to see any galleries.

We had dinner at a lovely restaurant in Silver City while the girls slept in the van parked just outside.

Tonight we are camping at the KOA in Silver City.  The owner of the campground was incredibly helpful and friendly.  When I checked in she gave me a couple of home baked cookies, one for me and one for the "mrs".

We will see how John survives the night.  It's too cold to pop the top so It's going to be awfully crowded in back with John, me, and two mutts.  And the mutts are bed hogs too!  I'm sure I'll be the one to end up sleeping in the driver's seat.
