day 1

We cheated.  We said we weren't going to do freeways and we ended up driving I-5  to Portland.   In our defense, we had an unplanned stop at, you guessed it,  Northwesty.  The  tachometer died as we were leaving town.  Here's a pic of us driving at speed with the tach registering zero:

The folks at Northwesty pulled apart the dash.   Turns out an electrical short fried the wire connection to the tach. Here's the inside of the dash:

Nothing to do but drive 3,500 miles without a tach.   After the unplanned delay leaving Seattle we decided to treat ourselves and spend the first night with the girls at The  Rivers Edge Hotel in Portland.  The girls are pooped and so are we.

Did I mention we almost ran out of gas?
At least I hope that was the reason the van sputtered and almost died on the freeway in Portland right before pulling in to the hotel.  We will find out tomorrow.

But to end the day on a high note,  here's a pic from our departure.
It's John and the girls,  and all three are smiling.
