We left the Galveston/Houston metro area early this morning, and in honor of Anna Nicole's hometown I'm starting out today's post with a picture of her.
Let's hope Vanna Nicole doesn't meet the same fate as Anna Nicole.
(And who is prettier, Anna Nicole or Vanna Nicole?)
We took a Texas state ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar. Texans brag that everything is bigger in Texas. Texans lie. The ferry boat was tiny compared to a Washington State ferry. I wonder what else Texans fib about. But seeing Anna Nicole's picture tells me there are at least two things bigger in Texas.
We took highway 87 out of Port Bolivar. We failed to notice this on the map:
We drove a dirt road and then on the beach, and we made it about 15 miles before we encountered very soft wet sand that Vanna almost got stuck in. It made our hearts pound but we managed to get turned around and head back out.
We were stoopid and very lucky, but it was an amazing journey and we are both glad we were brave enough to try it.
Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Another small ferry ride at Cameron, Louisiana and all the ferry workers were women. It appeared to be a family business.
We drove the Creole Nature Trail and stopped for freshly picked satsumas. Delicious.
We then headed up to Lake Charles to see their Mardi Gras Museum and the Charpentier historic district.
Lake Charles, Louisiana is another great find, historic and charming, and most people whiz right by it on I-10. It is their loss.
Tony Kushner ("Angels in America") grew up in Lake Charles. The synagogue and cathedral are both beautiful.
These pics are of the courthouse and city hall.
It is 6:00 now and we hear church bells ringing, a rare sound anymore in America. It will be a quiet evening for the four of us in Lake Charles. Cajun food at Pujo Street Cafe (dog friendly) and then to bed.
